Foster-Based Private Rescue
Silver Dragon Pets is a foster-based rescue, which means we do not have a central building. There are no kennels or rows of cages with sad animals reaching paws out begging to be taken out. All of the animals in our rescue are placed into foster homes in and around the Brainerd Lakes area. There, the animals are treated as a member of their foster family. They get to live in a home setting. They can work on basic training, potty training, or any other issues that might come up. It gives the foster family the unique opportunity to observe the foster pets and how they do with different situations. Is this dog afraid of the vacuum? Is this cat OK to go to a home with dogs? Is this rabbit cage aggressive? Living in a foster home offers our rescue animals less stressful living conditions than a traditional shelter, while also allowing us to better identify their personalities, needs, and determining what kind of a home they would be best suited for.
Silver Dragon Pets is a private rescue. We are not funded by local or state taxes, we do not take in animal control (stray impound) animals. We are funded entirely by surrender fees, donations, and adoption fees. You can find our available pets on Petfinder! |
Adoption ProcessIf one of our foster pets have pulled on your heartstrings, and you've decided you'd like to bring him or her home, please fill out an adoption application. It can be submitted via the email provided on the form.
Please also take a moment to read through our Adoption Contract to make sure you are in agreeance with our terms. Once your application has been processed and approved, we will reach out to you (usually via email) to arrange a day and time for a meeting with the pet. *Due to Covid we are no longer doing home checks. Instead we are doing all meetings in a public place (in Brainerd/Baxter, Little Falls, or Staples)* If the animal is ready to go and the meeting goes smoothly, you can pay the fee, sign the contract, and take the pet home from the meeting. If the pet isn't quite ready to leave just yet, you can pay the fee and sign the adoption contract, but the pet will have to go back to their foster home until their care is completed and they are ready to leave. If this is the case we will make every attempt to keep you updated on their progress until they are ready, at which point another meeting will be scheduled so the pet can go home with you. Veterinary paperwork will be provided at the time the pet actually leaves. |
We welcome donations!
We are always happy to receive donations. Financial donations not earmarked for a specific animal will be used for our most pressing need (almost always veterinary bills or food, sometimes for needed supplies) Financial donations are never used for administrative costs - we have no paid employees!
Please note that we are not 501(c)3. Donations are not tax-exempt. |
Surrendering A Pet
If you are unable to keep your pet, and would like to discuss surrendering to Silver Dragon Pets, please fill out a Surrender Application (submit via email on the form). Please note that due to space and financial limitations, there may be a waiting period. We are not currently able to take in large reptiles, large livestock, wildlife, stray animals, or anything requiring a permit to own.
