About Us
Silver Dragon Pets started out of frustration with the way another shelter was running. After volunteering for years (off and on from 1992-1999), and seeing all of the inner workings of surrender, adoption, and animal control / impound, I was left with a lot of questions.
What makes this pet adoptable, and yet that other pet never gets to see the adoption floor? Why are perfectly healthy animals being killed for cage space? How can adoptions be better promoted? Why aren't there more community outreach programs? Why aren't surrendering families counselled on possible solutions to help keep their pet, rather than giving them up? Why aren't foster homes utilized? Why are all of the special needs, certain breeds, and senior animals killed without the opportunity to find a suitable home? Why are animals having to be put down for going "cage crazy" from being in the stressful environment of an animal shelter for too long? Surely there must be a different way! I took in my first rescues in 2000, but only worked for a few months before shutting it down to move and start a family. Once settled, in 2004 I again started working with rescue animals from my own home. We specialized in special needs and animals from bad backgrounds. We took in puppy mill rescues, abuse and neglect cases, animals with defects, deformities, medical complications, severe separation anxiety, and yes, the occasional well loved owner-surrender pet too. We took another hiatus in 2013, as our funding was running out, our family had expanded, and our home no longer had the extra space to keep it all running. Flash forward to 2019. We moved, we have more space, and with older kids now, we can put our focus into rescue again. We are currently looking for qualified foster homes! All currently available pets can be found on our Petfinder Page. |
